The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) ("black-and-white cat-foot") is a mammal classified in the bear family, Ursidae, native to central-western and southwestern China. It is easily recognized by its large, distinctive black patches around the eyes, ears and on its rotund body. Though technically a carnivore, the panda has a diet which is 98% bamboo. However, they may eat other foods such as honey, eggs, fish, and yams.
The Giant Panda is an endangered animal; an estimated 3,000 pandas live in the wild and over 180 were reported to live in captivity by August 20xx in mainland China (another source by the end of 20xx put the figure for China at 221), with twenty pandas living outside of China.[citation needed]
However, reports show that the numbers of wild panda are on the rise.
The giant panda has long been a favorite of the public, at least partly on account of the fact that the species has an appealing baby-like cuteness that makes it seem to resemble a living teddy bear. The fact that it is usually depicted reclining peacefully eating bamboo, as opposed to hunting, also adds to its image of innocence. Though the giant panda is often assumed docile because of their cuteness, they have been known to attack humans, usually assumed to be out of irritation rather than predatory behavior.
The Giant Panda has a very distinctive black-and-white coat. Adults measure around 1.5 m long and around 75 cm tall at the shoulder. Males can weigh up to 115 kg (253 pounds). Females are generally smaller than males, and can occasionally weigh up to 100 kg (220 pounds). Giant Pandas live in
mountainous regions, such as Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, and Tibet. While the Chinese dragon has been historically a national emblem for China, since the latter half of the 20th century the Giant Panda has also become an informal national emblem for China. Its image appears on a large number of modern Chinese commemorative silver, gold, and platinum coins.
The Giant Panda has an unusual paw, with a "thumb" and five fingers; the "thumb" is actually a modified sesamoid bone, which helps the panda to hold the bamboo while eating. Stephen Jay Gould wrote an essay about this, then used the title The Panda's Thumb for a book of essays concerned with evolution and intelligent design. The Giant Panda has a short tail, approximately 15 cm long. Giant Pandas can usually live to be 20-30 years old while living in captivity.
Until recently, scientists thought giant pandas spent most of their lives alone, with males and females meeting only during the breeding season. Recent
studies paint a different picture, in which small groups of pandas share a large territory and sometimes meet outside the breeding season.[citation needed]
Like most subtropical mammals, but unlike most bears, the giant panda does not hibernate.
[edit] Diet
Pandas eating bamboo at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.Despite its taxonomic classification as a carnivore, the panda has a diet that is primarily herbivorous, which consists almost exclusively of bamboo. This is anevolutionarily recent adaptation. Pandas lack the proper enzymes to digest bamboo efficiently, and thus derive little energy and little protein from it.
While primarily herbivorous, the panda still retains decidedly ursine teeth, and will eat meat, fish, and eggs when available. In captivity, zoos typically maintain the pandas' bamboo diet, though some will provide specially formulated biscuits or other dietary supplements.

Stop Eating
Last Sunday at noon father took me to have lunch in a big restaurant.
Walking through the splendid hall, we entered No. 2 Private Room. Several uncles were already there. What a rich feast! On the round table were placed many dishes which I couldn't name. In front of everyone there was a small bowl of soup with a small piece of meat inside. Later I learned that was turtle soup, each bowl was worth 18 yuan and all the dishes cost 600 yuan. Although the food was very delicious, I felt heavy in my heart.
This Sunday the same thing happened. All the dishes were paid by public money just as last week. Then in my mind appeared the scene that several classmates left school be carse of poverty. If a table of dishes cost 600 yuan, how many 600 yuan will be used up a day? And how many children can return to school with so much money? For our country's prosperity and future, please stop "eating" with public money!
Since a warmhearted foreign man told me how to make a sandwich which is a kind of western food, I began to try to make and taste the sandwich which was very new to me. The first day , I got up earlier than usual, not to do exercise outside as usual , just spending my precious time making the sandwich carefully and slowly. During the process , I followed strictly by all of procedures he had taught me . I thought that the operation was seriously complicated . The second day, in order to save time , one of the means was lessened, so the sandwichdidn'tinclude lettuce. The third day, the cheese wasn't included . The fourth day , the bread was replaced by a steamed bun. One week later, I gave up thoroughly creating and eating the strange food to me, just tasting noodles which are a simple style of breakfast.
From that, I have been used to eating traditional food for a long time, my life style can't be changed easily, in the other words , it wasn't easily displaced by the new kind of food immediately.
The food was a token of culture. The modern world was full of culture shock . How to melt peacefully all types of cultures is still a challenge for the people of the globe now.
How influentital the Media on Teens Are
It has been a hot topic discussed heatedly for the time being that how indeed the media influence our teens. Different peopie come up with different opinions. The following passages are two different comments given by several teenagers ranging from 15 to 20.
One, Teens are the most influenced and the easiest to be influenced by the media. The media influence the way they dress, talk and conduct themselves. From the latest trends to the coolest celebrities, they imirate what they see, whether it's Katie Holmes's new haircut or the pink shirt that Christina Aguilera wore. So it follows that more serious actions like carrying arms or doing drugs could be copied as well.
Young people are impressionable. Therefore, some request that the media should take responsibility by changing some of the content of their shows especially those for teens. They are huge consumers of media, so networks should show them respect by promoting positive images. They think some shows confuse the lines between entertainment and life. The producers know their audiences are young, so they should realize that teens watching "reality" shows might not be able
to tell the difference between fantasy and fiction.
Opposing voices have also come from others. They think that they use the media--magazines, television and movies--to connect to one another and to the world, so naturally, they're influenced by the images the media present. For example, a boy would be lying if he said he didn't want to be like Brad Pitt. Pitt's flawless style, good looks and moneyXXX talent seem to define what's "cool".
Nevertheless, those teens hold that the media only provide information, what they as viewers do with that knowledge is up to themselves. They have to learn to make their own choices and accept responsibility for their actions. To blame entertainment figures for certain crimes committed by teens is
funny. It's not the fault of TV. Media are an expression of our culture--not the cause. It's time we stop XXX the media a scapegoat for our nation's problems. It's not the media's job to make sure kids understand what they're watching; that responsibility belongs to parents. Parents and schools should dedicate more time to establishing clear rules of discipline. The influence of parents and teachers--the teens' true role model--carries more weight with teenagers than what they hear on the radio or see at the movies.
