  Population to Be Curbed

Nothing in today’s world is as big a problem as that of population. People begin to worry about the support capacity of the earth. And there might be only standing room for each person in the future.

Lima’s population was 5. 7 million in 1985 but it grew to 9. 1 million in 20xx. Tianjin’s was 7.9 million in 1985. In 20xx, it boosted to 9. 7 million. Such cities as London, Osaka, Moscow, Beijing, Karachi, Delhi, Jakarta, Seoul, and Teheran are having a similar population growth. Calcutta, Shanghai, New York, and Sto Paulo see a faster population explosion. Tokyo had 18.8 million in 1985. In 20xx it turned into 20.2 million. Mexic city had 17.3 million people in 1985, but in 20xx, its population reached 25.8 million!

What does the population growth mean? It means greater and greater consumption and greater pressure for the earth. If more people are added to the world population without our being alert or taking any action, we would have only standing room by the end of the 21st century.

Each government and the UN should see that population of each country and each city stops growing for the next fifty years.

The picture gives us a view of a popular phenomenon: the adaptation of the classics. some classical literary works, such as our four great classics i.e. a dream of red mansions, journey to the west, the romance of the three kingdoms and heroes of the marshes, are all adapted to cater to some readers’ tastes. the traditional characters become so strange and the plots are totally different. it is so ridiculous that the precious literary treasures are allowed to be ruined so much.

As we all know, the classical literature is the representation of the outstanding art of our nation. some familiar characters such as monkey king epress the good wishes of our common people. from them, we learn many good virtues such as honesty, bravery, justice etc. however, in those adapted works named “bantering”or “reboiling”, all plots are changed and all characters become somewhat watered clown. some readers interested in reading burlesque works have high praise for them. but they never think of the negative effects of such adaptations on the average reader, especially to children. children are the future of the nation. they always believe that what is in the books is the truth. those adapted works will affect their outlook on life.

Therefore, some measures should be taken to restrict these adaptations. the real classics should be presented on the bookshelves to lead people to appreciate the real art.

i remember seeing harry that first evening. he wasnt much more than a thin, anious kid then. he was all dressed up and i knew he was meeting his girl and that they would be married twenty minutes after she arrived.

well, the passengers came up and i had to get busy. i didnt look toward the stairs again until nearly time for the 9:18 and i was very surprised to see that the young fellow was still there.she didnt come on the 9:18 either, nor on the 9:40, and when the passengers from the 10:02 had all arrived and left, harry was looking pretty desperate. pretty soon he came close to my window so i called out and asked him what she looked like.

"shes small and dark," he said, "and nineteen years old and very neat in the way she walks. she has a face," he said, thinking a minute, "that has lots of spirit. i mean she can get mad but she never stays mad for long, and her eyebrows come to a little point in the middle. shes got a brown fur, but maybe she isnt wearing it."i couldnt remember seeing anybody like that.

he showed me the telegram hed received: arrive thursday. meet me station. love love love love. may. it was from omaha, nebraska."well," i finally said, "why dont you phone to your home? shes probably called there if she got in ahead of you."

he gave me a sick look. "ive only been in town two days. we were going to meet and then drive down south where ive got a job. she hasnt any address for me." he touched the telegram.

when i came on duty the net day he was still there and came over as soon as he saw me.

"did she work anywhere?" i asked.

he nodded. "she was a typist. i telegraphed her former boss. all they know is that she left her job to get married."

harry met every train for the net three or four days. of course, the railroad lines made a routine checkup and the police looked into the case. but nobody was any real help. i could see that they all figured that may had simply played a trick on him. but i never believed that, somehow.

one day, after about two weeks, harry and i were talking and i told him about my theory. "if youll just wait long enough," i said, "youll see her coming up those stairs some day." he turned and looked at the stairs as though he had never seen them before.

the net day when i came to work harry was behind the counter of tonys magazine stand. he looked at me rather sheepishly and said, "well, i had to get a job somewhere, didnt i?"

so he began to work as a clerk for tony. we never spoke of may anymore and neither of us ever mentioned my theory. but i noticed that harry always saw every person who came up the stairs.

toward the end of the year tony was killed in some argument over gambling, and tonys widow left harry in complete charge of the magazine stand. and when she got married again some time later, harry bought the stand from her. he borrowed money and installed a soda fountain and pretty soon he had a very nice little business.

then came yesterday. i heard a cry and a lot of things falling. the cry was from harry and the things falling were a lot of dolls and other things which he had upset while he was jumping over the counter. he ran across and grabbed a girl not ten feet from my window. she was small and dark and her eyebrows came to a little point in the middle.

for a while they just hung there to each other laughing and crying and saying things without meaning. shed say a few words like, "it was the bus station i meant" and hed kiss her speechless and tell her the many things he had done to find her. what apparently had happened three years before was that may had come by bus, not by train, and in her telegram she meant "bus station," not "railroad station." she had waited at the bus station for days and had spent all her money trying to find harry. finally she got a job typing.

"what?" said harry. "have you been working in town? all the time?"

  she nodded.

"well, heavens. didnt you ever come down here to the station?" he pointed across to his magazine stand. "ive been there all the time. i own it. ive watched everybody that came up the stairs."

she began to look a little pale. pretty soon she looked over at the stairs and said in a weak voice, "i never came up the stairs before. you see, i went out of town yesterday on a short business trip. oh, harry!" then she threw her arms around his neck and really began to cry.

after a minute she backed away and pointed very stiffly toward the north end of the station. "harry, for three years, for three solid years, ive been right over there working right in this very station, typing, in the office of the stationmaster."

Spring is coming, plants and trees grow too fast, thirsty. With the boom and rumble, Duke Lei came knocking on the big drum, and miss Chun was so scared that she cried loudly, while Shuer Caoer happily gulped for water.

I sat in the classroom to write, and Mr. Lei scared me too, causing me to write askew.

InChina, it is a very common phenomenon of eating dog’s meat. Especially inwinter, if someone would like to mend the body, the first food come to theirmind would be dog meat, Chinese people consider it as a wonderful thing forblood-deficiency, dizziness. However, some people are quite different from eachother in their opinions on eating dog meat, they think we should stop eatingit. For me, I couldn’t agree with more.

Ihave reason to support my view, dog are human’s best friend, we should not eatour friend. Dogs are kept as a guard for family, and most families treat thedog as a family member, especially in the foreign family. While in Yulin,Guangxi province, there is a dog meat festival that held every year. When itcomes to this festival, thousands of dogs were killed in the street fortourists to eat. That is a very bloody, cruel behavior. Unfortunately, thesource of dog meat is usually illegal, which most comes from some one’s pet dogor the guard dog of village. Bad people would catch the dog that wondering inthe street or village, if they want more, they will poison them, then theycould catch them in a much easy way.

Takingthe above mentioned into consideration, I think, it is high time that we tookeffective measures to prevent this kind of behavior, if permitted to continue, will surely lead to a horrible situation, such as the number of dog fellsharply, and the people who eat dog meat might get sick for unhygienic orpoisonous meat. Dogs are our friend and our loyal guard, not our food.

I think it is necessary for college students to know the world outside the campus. For one thing, school life is relatively routine and somewhat monotonous. Students are busy attending lectures, doing homework and taking tests. For another, the world outside the campus is wonderful. It can be described in one word--variety. There are all kinds of people of different backgrounds from all fields of work. To know them is to learn. Besides, living alone in the ivory tower makes many a student a fool.

There are many ways to know the outside world. TV progratns, filrns, books and newspapers tell us a lot about what is going on both at home and abroad. We can also get to know the worm by providing social service to it. Some join in a volunteer group and help people with their special knowledge. Some work part time to gain experience, learn how to deal with people and get the data they need for their work. Some play games and get to know how team work plays a role in one's success.

I am a coliege student. I want to get to know the world outside the campus by reading a variety of books and by social interaction, I will visit libraries, museums and places of interests in addition to making as many friends as I can by being nice and friendly to others. In this way I will prove myself to be someone promising and useful to the society.

Computers play an important role in the modern world. Today they are used in many areas of human activities, such as business, industry, science, and education. The development of computers has also created many attractive job opportunities. I‘m a college student majoring in mathematics and as such I know quite well the powers of the computer. They have evolved as a natural consequence of man’s growing need for fast and accurate calculation. To make myself better equipped in my field of study I have learned several computer languages to communicate with the computer. My experience tells me that if we want to become competent users of the computer we must keep up with its development. Because modern industrialized society need computers to perform a wide range of tasks, I think a general knowledge of such wonderful machines is quite necessary for most of us.

Being online is no longer something new or fresh in our life. To some extent, it has become part of our daily life. We can do a lot of things online, such as searching for information and communicating with friends far away. But recently another helpful online activity has become very in. That is online education.

Why could online education be so popular within such a short period of time? Among other reasons, the quick development of the Internet should be an essential one, which makes all our dreams of attending class in the distance possible. Another underlying reason is the quick development of both society and technology. Today, modern science and technology is developing with fantastic speed. To catch up with this development we all feel an urgent and strong desire to study. However, due to the great pace of modern society, many people are too busy to study full time at school. Online education just comes to their aid.

Personally, I appreciate this new form of education. Its indeed a helpful complement to the traditional educational means. It can provide different learners with more flexible and versatile ways of learning. Best of all, with online education, we can stick to our jobs and at the same time study and absorb the latest knowledge..
